Poster Short Abstract

Citizen Science in education is a growing concept, with a lot of discussions on the impact it can have on promoting larger sets of data and lead to increased environmental action. However, little has been discussed on how it can impact education itself. In this poster we aim to explore this impact.

Poster Abstract

According to the UN air pollution is the biggest environmental health risk of our time. Air pollution around schools is linked to poorer student health and academic performance pointing to the need to raise awareness about the environmental quality

around schools, and to the adoption of measures to reduce children’s exposure to dangerous pollutants in the atmosphere. Furthermore, increased levels of CO2 inside classrooms has been shown to hinder students' academic performance.

AirSense is an Erasmus+ project that aims to empower students through citizen science to foster active civic engagement through the collection of data about air

quality around Europe and in using it to raise awareness and foster action towards this issue at local level.

The project will cocreate a low-cost DIY (do it yourself) air quality station with school aged students and their teachers, connecting schools from Portugal, Greece, Ireland and Germany (and beyond) through a pedagogical citizen science approach.

Furthermore, by merging tinkering/maker education with citizen science, the project will advance emerging technologies in citizen science while contributing to collaborative participatory research at a transnational level.

Through this it will advance the collection of data about air quality while promoting civic engagement, local decisionmaking, and political participation for a healthier and greener society.
